Being a production designer has currently been an interest of mine because I’m curious as to how a production/art designer works with the DoP and director to create effective images on screen. I didn’t realise until recently how important the role of a production designer was.
Without an artist’s watchful eye over the whole process, there would be no verisimilitude -the audience wouldn’t believe that was going on in the film was real. I want to research influential production designers, to learn from their techniques and meanwhile, marvel at their work. I really like the fact that being a production designer encompasses so much of the film making process and would like to learn about it further.
Exploring this role in film making will be brilliant because I’m an artist myself; I think that it will be a challenge for me to relate my art directly to film. My strengths regarding this role will probably be in story boarding and design of costumes. However, the things I will struggle with a little bit will probably be location scouting, lighting, and camera angles. This is simply because I have more experience with sketching out my ideas to do with costumes and sets and I have some experience with story boarding, whereas I don’t have as much experience at all with these other areas of art directing/ being a production designer.
I’m going to research the methods that influential production designers have used to get their ideas across and how they brought those ideas into reality, and perhaps, write a shot list and draw storyboards for a short film I could make in the future, and maybe design the costumes to go along with this same short film.
UPDATE: I've decided that I'm going to start a production design inspiration notebook as part of this arts award. See my Unit 1, Part B -Plan for more information.
